Disappointment set over his exhausted features, he felt too drained and sick to care if Harley noticed. Even so, he maintained his usual air of self-importance and dominance, and brushed Harley’s question to one side to instead silently look out of the window. He watched his men walk by, noting how none of them dared to look up to their window.
“You know what to do, don’t ya, slugger?” Managing a half-genuine smile, his slightly blood-shot eyes met with her adoring gaze. Her sympathy for him quite noticeable, even if she hadn’t wanted to show it, and his expression fell cold.
“Keep Bats busy when he gets here.”
Attention piqued at the sound of her pet name, she blinked her gaze away from the murky glass and back to the clown, turning on her heel to face him—baseball bat dragging noisily across the wood at her movement. A smile pulled at charcoal lips and she nodded slowly, accepting the challenge and lifting the bat so that it rested instead on her shoulder, making way for the door.
“You’ll be okay, won’t’cha?” A quiet voice asked, turning again when she reached the doorway. Eyes glassy with what might have been tears, her front teeth tugged and chewed on the skin of her lower lip, smudging the paint there.
